To mark the 70th birthday of Chris Frederick Martin IV, the D-18 1955 CFM IV 70th anniversary model was unveiled in 2025, limited to just 70 units worldwide. This soundmighty gem was inspired by an original 1955 D-18 that the Martin company had recently acquired at an auction. This guitar with serial number 144636 was part of the legendary collection of Skip Maggiora, a visionary entrepreneur from Sacramento whose passion for music and business helped shape California’s cultural and musical landscape for many decades. The top of the acoustic bears distinct signs of wear, underscoring its character and its storied past. The year 1955 was not only a milestone for the Martin family — it also marked the beginning of the folk boom, a movement that would forever shape the sound of American music and lead the company into its next great chapter. ...and so this D-18 perfectly captures that essence with its unmistakable sound and the playing feel of a true classic. The dreadnought body with a mahogany back and sides delivers rich, resonant tones. The top is made of reclaimed spruce sourced from virgin-growth trees in Alaska that were salvaged both on land and from the water, ensuring a clear, harmonious sound with that characteristic vintage character. Combined with the rear-set X-bracing made of Sitka spruce this creates a precise, focused tone with greater clarity in the highs and superb responsiveness. This excellent impression carries over to playability as well, as — thanks to the “GE-Modified Low Oval Neck with Standard Taper” — one can glide effortlessly across the beautiful rosewood fingerboard with the attractive mother-of-pearl inlays in the style of the 1955 model.
