This is a genuinely special piece of Gibson history — a 1939 Gibson L-7 archtop, identified by its internal "EA-5403" factory order number (the EA prefix places Gibson's higher-grade archtops at 1939), with a documented single-owner history dating back to 1955. The guitar has been in the same hands for nearly 70 years and has been sitting in storage under a bed for the past 25+ years. A receipt for professional maintenance/service from 1998 accompanies the guitar, adding to its documented history.

The L-7 was Gibson's respected mid-to-upper-tier archtop of the era, built with picture frame X-bracing, a carved spruce top, bound f-holes, and ornate fingerboard inlays well beyond the simple dot markers found on Gibson's budget models — all present here.

At some point in its life, a DeArmond soundhole pickup (Rhythm Chief-style, floating/clamp-mounted with the volume control on its own bracket) was added, making the guitar usable both acoustically and amplified without permanent modification to the top.

Cosmetically, the guitar shows honest, expected wear for an 85+ year-old instrument. There are shallow surface marks and light knicks on the back of the neck that don't affect playability, and no neck cracks are present. Near the endpin/strap button on the lower bout, there is a small protrusion/hairline line in the finish — consistent with either old glue squeeze-out or natural wood expansion over many decades — noted here for transparency; buyers with questions on this specific spot are encouraged to ask before purchase. There is a missing neck strap button. The original pickguard is included but has deteriorated with age (typical of the celluloid material Gibson used in this period) and will ship as-is, as a piece of the guitar's history rather than a functional part.

Tonally, this is where an 85-year-old archtop separates itself from anything built today: decades of the top and back wood drying out, settling, and continuing to vibrate under string tension have given this guitar a huge, loud, woody voice with a complexity of overtones that can't be replicated in a new build. This is the tonal maturity vintage archtop players specifically chase.

Includes original hardshell case (OHSC).
