This is an early 80’s Les Paul Custom. Although the decal has long since been removed from the headstock, the details like logo, truss cover, headstock shape, tuners, long neck tenon, weight, binding, patina, case, and overall build quality and feel align with the era and Japanese build. Also note worthy is that it came from a collection with other 80’s MIJ guitars of that era.
I’ve owned plenty of Lesters to know which are “real” and which are Chinese knockoffs. This one feels and plays as it should as a MIJ piece.
With that, it’s 40+ years old. Although it has not been abused, it obviously has signs of use. It weighs almost 10lbs. It has a slim neck that is setup and plays well. A couple knobs have been changed, but the originals are in the case with the pick guard. Comes in the older vintage Epiphone case.
The pickups will squeal in front of a loud tube amp. My opinion and that of my tech think they need the covers reattached and/or wax potted. Otherwise, they sound gritty, thick, and what I’d consider “vintage“. That said though, there aren’t markings on the back so who knows what they are at this point. Are they original, maybe. I know if you’re looking to play blues and or rock, I wouldn’t change them though.
As me any questions. I’m happy to take more pics. It’s an honest old guitar. It’s a beast.
