I’m getting back into the audio hobby again. It’s been a lifetime thing for me—I’ve even built my own gear in the past, so I really care about finding that perfect sound. I picked this Linn Classik up recently just to test out that famous "Linn sound" in my own room again as an integrated amp, power amp, and preamp hub. Right out of the gate, you need to know that the internal DVD/CD player is dead—it won't read discs and the tray doesn't open. I knew this when I bought it, and since I only needed it for its killer amplification, tuner, and preamp stages, the broken disc drive didn't matter to me at all.

Well, the Linn sound bit me hard. This unit sounded so good it triggered an absolute avalanche of upgrades in my main rig. I went completely off the deep end and built a massive all-Linn backbone: right now I’m setting up a Linn Numerik DAC running through an Ashly XR-4001 active crossover, with two separate Linn AV5125 multi-channel amps driving all the individual drivers on my Linn Akudorik monitors, and a legendary Linn Klout handling the heavy lifting as the subwoofer amp for my Satterberg towers. Because I just dropped a fortune on all that high-end gear, this Classik Movie has to go to help pay for the madness.

Before the new gear arrived, I was using this Classik Movie strictly as integrated amplifier for my setup. It worked great and gave me that clean, detailed sound I was looking for. I also ran it with my Linn Afekt compact active subwoofer, and it did a fantastic job.

My Real-World Bench Test

Because I build and work on gear, I don't just plug something in for five minutes and call it "tested." I put this Linn through my full, rigorous bench testing protocol before listing it:

  • 48-Hour Silent Stress Test: The unit sat powered on for 48 hours straight under idle stress to ensure the internal logic, power supply, and thermal regulation are 100% healthy and stable.
  • 48-Hour Audio Test: I ran regular music through it continuously into real speaker loads for another 48 hours to check for any signal degradation or playback issues.

During this 96-hour gauntlet, I tested every single input channel and every single speaker terminal channel. Everything works flawlessly, outputs clean power, and holds a solid connection.

The Ultimate Preamp Torture Test

I love to switch power amps out quite often just to hear their different sonic signatures, so I benched this Linn as a standalone preamp to drive some serious heavyweights on my rack. If you know vintage powerhouses and pro gear, you know they can be pretty damn "hissy" when you hook them up to a cheap preamp.

I ran this Linn directly into my monster Perreaux stack—the massive Perreaux PMF 2350, the PMF 1150B, and the PMF 1050—plus a pair of Amber Series 70s running as monoblocks, my professional Hafler gear including a pair of PRO P7000s running as monoblocks, a P3000, and a P1500, my QSC USA 900, my Audionics CC-2, my Audio by Van Alstine amp, the Acurus A80, a Crown Microtech 1202, and even my Kinergetics SW-200 sub amp.

The Linn preamp section was so dead quiet it completely silenced the background noise on every single one of them. It let the true flavor of those amps come through my Linn Sekrit and Tukan speakers with awesome detail.

What Works (and What Doesn't)

I want to be totally honest so we’re on the same page. It's a solid 7 out of 10. It has some normal rack scuffs from age, and there is a small, minor indentation/dent on the back of the metal chassis. It doesn’t affect the inputs, terminals, or performance whatsoever, but I want to be 100% transparent. See pictures.

  • The Bad (As Mentioned Above): The internal DVD/CD player doesn't work. It won't read discs and the tray won't open. Treat this strictly as a high-end integrated amp, tuner, and multi-input preamp.
  • The Speaker Connections: Linn's speaker terminals can be a uniquely tight fit. I didn't want to mess with the unit or the terminals themselves, so I just took some needle-nose pliers and gave the tips of my own banana plugs a little pinch so they would stay nice and snug. Everything works fine and the connection is solid.
  • The Good: Everything else is great. The Preamp, Tuner, and Aux inputs all work perfectly. Even the Surround modes work like they should. Every single button on the front face works.
  • The Video: I uploaded a video so you can see it actually working. You’ll see the display is bright and clear, and I cycle through all the inputs to show you the internal logic is 100% healthy. Even though I’m not including a remote with this sale, I tested it with one and the unit responds perfectly to remote commands.

This is a standard US 115v unit. Standard power cord is included. Note that this is for the unit only—no remote or manual.

Audiophile Value & Specs

Even without the disc drive, you are getting the heavy-duty engineering of a unit that cost nearly $3,000 new. The Class AB Amplifier section (75 Wpc into 4 ohms / 40 Wpc into 8 ohms) sounds worlds better than any modern budget receiver you'll find today.

Shipping & Terms

This thing weighs about 25 lbs, and I pack gear for war. Since I build gear, I know how bad shipping carriers can be. I’m going to use double boxes and tons of bubble wrap so it gets to you completely safe.

  • Terms: Since the disc drive is broken, I’m selling this AS-IS with no returns. It’s a killer piece of gear, but please watch the video and look at the pictures so you know exactly what you're getting.

If you want that famous Linn sound without spending a fortune, this is a great way to get it. Drop me a line if you have any questions.
