Matchless HC-30L Head | Early Sampson Era | Serial M1943 | Studio Owned Since 2002

For sale is my early Sampson-era Matchless HC-30L head, serial number M1943.

This is a black-tolex HC-30L that appears to be an early production example, with internal markings indicating late 1993 manufacture. The amp remains one of the finest examples of hand-wired American boutique amplification and delivers the unmistakable Matchless chime, harmonic complexity, touch sensitivity, and punch that made these amplifiers legendary.

History

I purchased this amplifier from Make'n Music in Chicago in 2002 after auditioning for and landing the guitar chair for a planned Plumb tour. Matchless amplifiers were a significant part of the guitar sound I was pursuing at the time, and this HC-30L was purchased specifically for that opportunity.

Shortly thereafter, the tour was cancelled, and the amp remained in my private studio. It has never been used as a road amp during my ownership and has spent the last 24 years in a controlled studio environment.

Condition

The amplifier is in very good overall condition for its age and presents exactly as a well-cared-for professional studio amplifier should. It shows normal cosmetic wear consistent with age but has never been subjected to the rigors of touring.
