Gold Star banjos dominated the bluegrass scene in the 1970s. At the time, they produced archtop models which were very popular. Even today, they remain popular overseas and are traded at prices exceeding their original value. This is a used 2003 "GF-85" model. This is a flat-head model from the later production run. It features a mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard with MOP Style-3 inlays, a 3-ply maple rim and mahogany resonator, Hearts & Flowers inlays, a 1-piece flange, a bell bronze 20-hole flat-head tone ring, and a pressed tailpiece?a specification meticulously crafted in the pre-war style. The hardware is, of course, nickel-plated. The finish reflects a commitment to the flat-head banjos made in the 1930s. A practical upgrade has been made with a spike at the 7th and 9th fret of the 5th string. While there is some tarnishing on the nickel, overall it is a highly recommended item with minimal signs of use.
