The True Vintage Custom is wound around the voice of early 1950s Blackguard-era Telecasters — that compressed, harmonically rich tone that comes from Alnico 3 magnets and Formvar wire working together. Softer on the attack than any Alnico 5 Tele, but more present and complex in the midrange.

For players chasing the feel of a pre-1955 Tele — that warm, slightly fuzzy neck position, the bridge that bites without thinning, the way the whole guitar feels alive and responsive at lower gain. Blues, roots rock, country, and anything that benefits from a pickup with warmth and personality baked in at the magnet level.

Alnico 3 is the magnet Leo Fender used in the early Broadcaster and Nocaster years before supplies ran out and production shifted to Alnico 5. It's a softer, warmer magnet than A5 — lower gauss, less magnetic pull on the strings, a gentler attack with more low-mid compression. The result is a pickup that feels more elastic and forgiving under the pick while retaining the Tele's natural clarity and articulation.

Formvar wire adds to that warmth — a rounder, fuller top end compared to Plain Enamel, with more bloom and less immediate bite. Together, Alnico 3 and Formvar produce a voice that sits slightly back from the aggressive snap of the High-Line or Skylark without losing presence or cut.

The neck runs hotter than the bridge on this set — true to the Blackguard-era winding approach, where the neck was pushed to keep pace with a loud, copper-baseplated bridge. The result is a neck pickup with genuine body and presence, not the thin, polite neck tone you find on most modern Tele sets.
