The 1986 Fender Contemporary Stratocaster Made in Japan (MIJ) is a highly regarded "Superstrat" manufactured during a pivotal era when Fender paused US production and relied heavily on the legendary FujiGen Gakki factory to build its flagship export instruments. Designed to compete with the heavy rock and shred guitars of the 1980s, these models departed from traditional Stratocaster builds by integrating modern electronics, flatter fretboard radii, and advanced locking tremolo systems.

The Contemporary Series offered several distinct pickup layouts and hardware packages:

• Pickup Configurations: Deluxe HSS (one humbucker, two single-coils)
• Neck and Body: Alder body paired with a maple neck. Fretboard is dark rosewood with 22 frets and a comfortable 12-inch radius tailored for fast playing.

The Famous (and Complex) Tremolo System:

• Fender System 3: This is a highly sophisticated, engineering marvel! It features an integrated locking mechanism on the headstock that flips open and closed, a height adjustment system near the strap button, and a push-in whammy bar and best of all a broken string on a System 3 will not pull the other strings out of tune
