Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a very rare variant of the Electro Voice model 950 "Cardax" crystal cardioid microphone. This is the Ampro 18502 model that was sold under contract back in the 1950's which E.V did with several audio companies. This practice was common and Shure Brothers did the same for several decades. This uique Ampro 18502 comes with it's own distinct hammered brown paint scheme as where the E.V 950 was a polished chrome finish. The Ampro 18502 comes with a period Shure Brothers S-36 model desk stand in which to display.

It should be noted that this mic is so rare that it's the only example I have ever come across and I was not aware that there was an Ampro variant of this mic? To my knowledge this is the only 950 variant ever sold with another badge and this example is quite nice. It should also be noted that the mic's crystal still works but it's quite weak and is only about 25% output. This will still make a great addition to any fine vintage mic collection.

Pic # 2 shows this very model in the E.V line up of cardioid microphones being sold at that time in 1946. This Ampro 18502 may very well be a 1940's era mic.

This 950 Cardax utilized the crystal element which had a decent sound when they were new but most of these 950 model mics no longer even work at all. The mic can always be upgraded but because of it's rarity it is better off being used for display, prop or repair purposes. This mic has been thoroughly cleaned and tested. The wiring and all the other components are still inside.

As seen in the pics provided the painted finish has just very lite wear. There is just tiny paint chips and scratches but there are no dents or fractures. Please let the pictures be your guide. I try to provide the most detailed, up close photos available so you know exactly what you are getting and no buyers remorse so common with these older mics. The joint mechanism holds strong and the switch mechanism works just as it should. The black screens show virtually no wear and they are still evenly colored. Threads for the cable and stand are perfect. The Ampro badge looks fantastic and the on / off switch works perfectly.

This mic I would rate this an easy 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. A fun piece to display anywhere in your home, office or studio.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...

It's a good looking Shure S-36 model desk stand that you can display the 950 on as the mic seats perfectly on top. The stand has extremely lite wear but makes for a very stable platform.   It compliments the mic at the same time and the two almost look as though they originally belonged together. The S-36 really compliments the Ampro mic nicely.

The stand is an aluminum design with a very nice silver / grey painted finish. There are no scuff marks, scratches, dents, corrosion or fractures. It has the 5 new felt pads on the bottom of the base as well as the cable clamp and a bolt to hold the mic securely to the stand. It has the original push to talk mechanism which is no longer wired but could be again if needed. The dimensions with the stand and mic are appx 9 inches tall X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep.

This mic will screw onto any microphone desk or floor stand you have or want though the S-36 is already provided.

If you demand rare and unique the Ampro 18502 will certainly get the job done.
