Gibson Custom Shop L-4 CES Vintage Sunburst 2001 - $6250
This is a 2001 Gibson Custom Shop L-4 CES with the wine-red finish and gold hardware. This guitar is in excellent condition. Mild oxidation of the gold hardware per the age of the guitar. No scratches that I can I find. No dings or nicks. The back also has no scratches and a nice flamed maple that does not come through well in the photos. Built in the Custom Shop and approved by Gibson master luthier James W. Hutchins on October 12, 2001. There is a signed tag on the inside of the guitar with James’s signature and the date.
The guitar sounds and plays fantastic. Professionally set up with low action. The low E string measures between 0.05- and 0.06-inches gap at the 12th fret using a string action gauge. No buzzes.
The guitar has the same shapes as the ES-175, with a 16-inch lower bout and the Florentine (pointed) cutaway. Unlike the ES-175 model, which has a laminate top, the L-4 CES has a solid carved Sitka spruce top. A more expensive guitar to build than the ES-175. The back & sides are figured maple laminate. Triple binding on the top, back, and fingerboard. Mahogany neck with ebony finger board and double parallelogram inlay made of mother-of-pearl. The scale length is 24 ¾ inches. The nut width is 1 11/16 inches. Two Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers. Gibson Deluxe tuners made by Kluson. Nitrocellulose high-gloss lacquer.
The guitar includes the original Gibson case with the Custom shop logo. The case in is in good condition. No tears or rips. Some oxidation of the latches and a little fading of the tolex covering.
Gibson no longer makes the hollow body arch tops commonly used for jazz guitar. If you are looking for an L-4 CES from this era, this is a very clean guitar.
