Gibson Century of Progress Mandolin 1930's
This mandolin was released between 1933 and 1941 to commemorate “The Century of Progress,” the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair held in celebration of Chicago’s 100th anniversary.
It is characterized by a headstock and fingerboard made of a resin material known as “Pearloid.” Since this material was also used for toilet seats, it was reportedly nicknamed “the mother of toilet seats.” Flat back,
The Pearloid on the headstock has deteriorated, and there are some areas where it is missing. There are no missing sections on the fingerboard. There is a crack in the truss rod cover. The finish on the back of the neck is peeling in some areas. The pickguard and tailpiece appear to be original. The original tuners likely had resin buttons, so they may have been replaced. The bridge base appears to be original, but the saddle seems to have been replaced.
Overall, there are minor scratches and dents, but nothing conspicuous, and there are no visible cracks in the wood or signs of prior repairs.
The neck is in good condition, and the string action can be adjusted at the bridge. The frets are worn down to about 50% of their original height, but this does not currently affect playability.
A standard hard case is included.
