Yamaha SA-20
Semi-Hollow, electric 12-string
Circa 1968, Japan
A damn fine, pristine example of SA-20, the 12-string model in Yamaha's historic SuperAxe series.
While Japan's early exports were mostly ultra-cheap or ultra-freaky (often both!), these set a new standard. The first-world build-quality and singular styling propelled Yamaha onto the global market ahead of any of its peers.
In 1967 the SuperAxe line was revised and the original SA-5 model was discontinued, then replaced with 2 new models, the entry-level SA-30 and the top of the line SA-50, distinguished by higher grade hardware and cosmetic details.
Then in 1968, to round out the SuperAxe series, Yamaha apparently noted rising demand for Rickenbackers and 12-strings, catalyzed by the Beatles, Byrds and others and responded with the addition of 2 new models, the SA 15, with Ric-esque shape, cat-eye and checkerboard binding and this model, the SA-20, electric 12 , adapting a long headstock to the original SA body and electronics.
The Colonel picked this up in Japan many years ago, from the family of original owner, but seldom played it, so the guitar's in absolutely remarkable condition after nearly 60 years, with no significant marks and very few scratches or dings. Could easily pass for a recent re-issue, if such a thing existed!
Sorry, no case (we suspect there's a story there, but seemed like a potential trigger, so we're not asking!)
