Up for sale is a magnificent example of one of American brass making’s most celebrated instruments: the J.W. York & Sons “Professional” cornet, serial #17997, made in Grand Rapids, Michigan circa 1908. This is the shepherd’s crook model — the iconic top-tier offering from a company that counted Frank Holton among its early craftsmen and whose instruments are today held in the Smithsonian Institution’s permanent collection.

The Instrument

Silver-plated brass with ornate hand-engraved bell featuring York’s classic scrollwork and the original medallion inscription: “Professional / Made by / J.W. York & Sons / Grand Rapids, Mich.” Traces of original gold wash remain visible in the engraving recesses and inside the bell — a beautiful survivor of 115+ years. Short-action top-sprung piston valves with original mother-of-pearl buttons move freely. All slides free except the main tuning slide (a spare main tuning slide is included). Original corks and felts intact; springs and water key corks were replaced as part of a recent cleaning.

The horn plays. It produces a warm, characteristic vintage cornet tone. There is some minor air leakage consistent with its age and original corkage — a competent tech could bring this to full playing condition with a standard service. Not a basket case; a player-restorable professional instrument.

Condition Notes

• Silver plate: substantial coverage remaining; plating loss in high-touch areas (valve section, finger hook, leadpipe) as expected on a 115-year-old horn

• One dent on the bell; scattered minor dings throughout the body

• Engraving crisp and legible; gold splash traces visible in recesses and bell interior

• No major structural damage observed; no resolders observed

Historical Context

J.W. York & Sons cornets of this era are considered among the finest American-made instruments of the golden age of band music. Serial #17997 was built during York’s peak production period, roughly contemporaneous with the Smithsonian’s own #17527 (also dated circa 1907–1908). The Professional model was York’s flagship shepherd’s crook cornet, introduced in 1903 and built to exacting standards for working soloists and bandsmen.

A rare opportunity to own a complete, original-case example of a true American masterwork.
