Offered is a rare, second-year 1938 Kay Model 60 full-sized Cello. This pre-war instrument is a fantastic candidate for a light restoration. Unlike many project instruments, the sound post is original and remains properly set in place, ensuring the structural stability of the body.Included Components:

  • Original Hardware: Includes the original tailpiece, tuning pegs, and endpin.
  • Sound Post: Securely in place.
  • Bridge: Included (unattached).
  • Finish: Original walnut/brown lacquer with authentic age crazing.

Condition:
The cello is currently unstrung. The laminate body is solid with no major structural cracks or collapses. The neck and scroll are in good vintage condition. It will require the work of a luthier and perhaps a bridge fitting to be playable.

Historical Significance:
The Model 60 was the "workhorse" of the early Kay line. Because it is a 1938 model (Serial #3113), it features the high-quality craftsmanship of the early Chicago factory era.

Why this cello?
Early Kay cellos from the 1930s are highly durable and valued for their unique vintage tone, often used in folk and jazz settings. Pre-war models like this one are increasingly hard to find in any condition.
