The 2020 PRS Silver Sky Limited Edition Nebula perfectly demonstrates how a traditional vintage feel and modern precision can come together in a single instrument. Developed in close collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, the Silver Sky originated from the idea of reimagining the most beloved characteristics of early sixties single-coil guitars with the playability and build quality of a modern PRS. The Nebula version takes that concept a step further with a spectacular, multi-colored finish that makes every guitar completely unique.
Beneath the striking finish lies an extremely well-thought-out instrument. The 635JM single-coil pickups deliver a warm, full tone with a round top-end without the sharp edge that some vintage-inspired single-coils can have. The steel tremolo system is based on the patented PRS design with Gen III knife-edge screws and sits flush with the body for maximum resonance and tuning stability. The inverted headstock is also not only visually distinctive; The equal string length behind the nut ensures more stable tuning and a consistent string response. Together with the vintage-style locking tuners and the comfortable neck with a 7.25” radius, this results in a guitar that feels instantly familiar, yet plays with remarkable refinement.
The Limited Edition Nebula models have become among the most sought-after versions of the early Silver Sky series. The combination of Mayer’s preference for broken-in vintage guitars and PRS’s obsession with detail results in an instrument with an exceptional dynamic range, a very direct attack, and an almost acoustic openness in the tone. From crystal-clear cleans to warm, vocal-like overdrives: this Silver Sky feels built to be played, but thanks to its rare finish and limited production run, it also holds a special appeal for collectors.
This Silver Sky has clearly accumulated signs of play on the body, making it a true player! Ultimately, this is what guitars are made for, no matter how rare they are. The guitar comes with a TFOA passport in a PRS gig bag.
