A stereo condenser system at the top of European microphone engineering —at a special transition time where laboratory-grade external powering, modular construction, and ultra-low-noise discrete circuitry were pushed to remarkably advanced levels long before modern phantom-powered condenser systems became standard. The CM 060 series already carried the unmistakable SWISS Schoeps philosophy of openness, realism, and ultra-natural high-frequency detail decades before contemporary low-noise small-diaphragm technology emerged.

This beautifully complete early Strässer-branded CM 060 stereo system remains in fully original configuration, including the dedicated 6-pin small Tuchel powering architecture and two original 6 NAG external power supply units. Both microphones have been carefully refurbished, extensively tested, and verified to perform consistently as a true stereo pair with exceptionally open, airy, and highly detailed sound reproduction.

BUILD & DESIGN

The CM 060 follows the classic early Schoeps modular small-diaphragm architecture with a slim cylindrical body and separate screw-on capsule assembly. The microphones retain their original metal finish with Strässer branding and preserve the complete factory powering system using multi-pin Tuchel connectors. Unlike later phantom-powered Schoeps systems, these microphones operate through dedicated external power supplies, maintaining the original electrical operating conditions intended for the amplifier stages.

The included 6 NAG power supply units are housed in heavy hammered-grey metal enclosures typical of professional German studio equipment from the era. Internally, the PSU design uses a transformer-based linear supply with discrete components and original calibration circuitry.

CAPSULE

The CM 060 is a true condenser small-diaphragm microphone system developed during the early modular Schoeps period. The capsule design is known for extremely fast transient response, excellent openness, and highly natural top-end extension without exaggerated harshness. The result is a spacious and realistic presentation with remarkable stereo imaging capabilities when used as a calibrated pair.

CIRCUIT

This pair uses the original discrete FET amplifier version of the CM 060 system and retains its fully original circuitry. The design follows Schoeps’ early high-voltage FET approach, operating around a 70 V internal rail for increased headroom and exceptionally low distortion.

Instead of relying on transformer coloration, the amplifier uses a carefully biased discrete FET topology designed for maximum linearity, fast transient response, and extremely stable capsule loading. This high-voltage architecture allows the microphone amplifier stages to maintain remarkable clarity even at high SPLs while preserving the open, natural tonality and refined low-noise performance that became characteristic of early Schoeps modular systems.

POWER SUPPLY

Each 6 NAG power supply unit includes an internal calibration potentiometer allowing precise current adjustment for optimizing the operating conditions of its paired microphone.

Each PSU has been individually calibrated to its corresponding microphone configuration to achieve the lowest possible self-noise profile. For this reason, the power supplies are tagged (with removable stickers) as System 1 and System 2 and should remain paired with their designated microphone assemblies.

  • Power Supply 1 → Preamp Nr. 14299 / Capsule Nr. 7729
  • Power Supply 2 → Preamp Nr. 13309 / Capsule Nr. 7268

Calibration and matching were carried out under measurement conditions to ensure minimal noise and highly consistent stereo performance.

This configuration functions either as a fully calibrated plug-and-play stereo system or as two independent mono systems.

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS

This stereo pair delivers the type of presentation that made early Schoeps small-diaphragm systems so respected in classical and acoustic recording environments. The sound is exceptionally open, airy, and finely detailed while remaining smooth and natural through the upper frequencies.

Transient response is extremely fast, giving string instruments, piano, percussion, and acoustic guitar remarkable realism and dimensionality. The stereo image is wide and stable, with excellent depth and highly precise localization.

Despite their age, these microphones remain impressively quiet and retain a refined, effortless top-end character that works beautifully for classical main-pair recording, chamber ensembles, piano, acoustic instruments, ambient stereo capture, jazz, ethnic instruments, and other highly dynamic acoustic sources.

FREQUENCY RESPONSE

Estimated Frequency Response:

40 Hz – 20,000 Hz

  • Extremely open and extended upper range
  • Smooth airy presence region
  • Very natural transient reproduction
  • Controlled low-end response without excessive coloration
  • Excellent stereo imaging and spatial detail
