Tascam 488 MKI - PRO SERVICED AND BELT REPLACED in 2025. Serviced by Functional.fyi (aka Functional Tech in San Francisco)

Here is the description from Functional Tech circa March 2025 when I purchased this:

This rare Tascam 8-track cassette recorder is ready for its next owner.

I have repairs dozens of tape players and 4-tracks, and have done the following repairs on this unit to bring it back to life:

- Changed the belt (there is only one belt on this unit)

- Calibrated the tape speed

- Cleaned and rejuvenated the pinch roller with Rubber Renue

- Deoxit Fader has been applied to the sliders

- Cleaned inside and outside

- Cleaned and demagnatized the record/playback heads

- Tested recording and playback on all channels

The only issue I have found is that sometimes the play and stop buttons require a tiny bit extra force. This is a common issue with these units, and a lot of vintage gear. They still work and do not warrant a full replacement of the switches at this time.
