FGN guitars is the brand name used by Fujigen - a name synonymous with high quality Japanese guitars since the beginning, and the same factory that built vintage Greco's and Ibanez guitars, and still builds the Prestige and J Custom line for Ibanez today, along with other brands.
This particular NSG-100 appears to be from a limited run made for 2016, part of their Neo Classic line, that came in Cherry, Snow White and Walnut finish.
This Walnut finish is absolutely beautiful from every angle thanks to the deep brown colour over the super stripy mahogany that was chosen to build this particular SG with,
This model did not show up in the FGN 2015/2016 catalog, but based on the Solid Guitar fandom page, this model is made with an African mahogany body, with 1 piece African mahogany neck and Kalimantan Ebony fretboard - although impossible to tell for sure, that appears to be the case here, and you can clearly see the orange mahogany in the pickup cavities. The fretboard looks very similar to rosewood - although it's quite dark, with a really nice dark swirl running up the length of the board.
All of the components on this guitar are top shelf - including the nickel Gotoh GE104B bridge & aluminum tailpiece, nickel Gotoh Kluson style tuners tuners, full size 500K pots, and bone nut. Although I love vintage guitars, sometimes old ABR style bridges can be loose and rattle - but these newer Gotoh bridges look like a vintage bridge, but are incredibly solid.
All FGN brand guitars use the Fujigen proprietary C.F.S. (Circle Fretting System) - which means that the frets are slightly rounded to match the radius of the fretboard, nut and bridge, instead of perfectly perpendicular to the fretboard. This technology is supposed to help with intonation across the entire fretboard. To me, playing it doesn't look or feel any different than a typical SG, so the difference is subtle and you don't have to worry about it feeling off, but it does play extremely well and the C.F.S. technology may be part of that reason.
The frets ends on this guitar are finished incredibly well, what you'd expect on an Ibanez Prestige.
Everything on this guitar appears to be original, and this guitar is in very good player grade condition. There are a couple small dings and dents on the side of the body, and some minor scratches and swirling over the entire guitar - but nothing major that affects the tone or playability, and no signs of a heel or headstock crack or repair. This guitar has been used, but certainly not abused.
All of the nickel hardware including the bridge, tailpiece, pickup covers & pole pieces, screws and tuners are all in good shape, with only light cloudiness in some areas (which nickel is known to do), everything works as expected, and the overall patina is consistent on all the hardware.
The 1 piece mahogany neck is a joy to play on - it is wide and thick. This is not like a Gibson '61 SG, this neck is substantial in the hand. It has a beautiful dark Kalimantan Ebony fretboard, with expertly executed acrylic celluloid looking trapezoid inlays.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have been played, and there is some minor play wear on the 1st to 5th frets mainly on the plain strings, but overall there is lots of life left in these frets, and the guitar plays extremely well up and down the entire neck.
The original humbuckers have a lot of power and punch on tap, and they're lower wind in the 7.38K to 7.48K range, which keeps them bright and articulate when the volume is all the way up, and when you roll down the volume and tone, and you're able to recreate many tones you're looking for. But they still have plenty of low end on tap. They are great sounding pickups that can handle most genres really well.
All the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.
I setup all my Gibson style guitars to Gibson factory specs - including neck relief, action, pickup height, intonation, and tailpiece height. So this guitar will be ready to play out of the box (after you tune it up - I ship my guitars with the strings loosened).
Comes with the original FGN banded padded gig bag. This is a great gig bag, with nice pockets, good straps, and proper reinforcement inside. It is used, and there interior has some ripping by the headstock - where the string ends have dug in, but nothing that prevents it from being used immediately.
Overall, this is an extremely high quality professional grade guitar made by one of the best guitar factories in the world.
If you're looking for a Japanese made SG Standard that stands out from the rest of the pack, grab this one today!
CONDITION ------------
Overall it's in very good player grade shape.
I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos and in the description.
Across the entire body, top, back side, neck, and headstock, there are a few dings, dents, scratches, and swirling, with most of the dings/dents along the bottom edge of the body.
Around the strap buttons there's strap marks/swirling.
All of the nickel hardware including the bridge, tailpiece, pickup covers & pole pieces, screws and tuners are all in good shape, with only light cloudiness in some areas (which nickel is known to do), everything works as expected, and the overall patina is consistent on all the hardware.
The black plastics are in tact with typical scratches and pick marks.
All of the Gotoh Kluson style tuners are straight and working properly.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have been played, and have some minor play wear on the 1st to 5th frets mainly on the plain strings, but overall there's lots of life left in these frets, and the guitar plays very well up and down the entire neck.
There's no signs of a headstock, heel or any other repairs.
The truss rod works as expected, with room in both directions.
