Here we have one of the earliest Yamaha electric guitars, the SG-3! This example comes in the sought-after Coral Red, and has an undeniable vibe.
The 4-digit serial number on the last fret reads "0227" and between the serial and specs, we've narrowed manufacture between 1966 and 1967, making it extremely early in the world of Yamaha electric guitars.
This guitar is far from perfect, and could use some more time on the bench than we have to offer it for now, so we are selling it here on our Warehouse Deals shop for a significant discount.
Some of the electronics (most notably the bridge pickup coil-blend wheel) are a bit noisy, and can be intermittent. The action is a bit higher, and will need to be setup correctly and dialed in. Since everything is a little out of wack, the intonation is spotty as well. This does have smaller vintage frets, which show some wear. While the guitar does not have any completely dead spots, some frets are more resonant than others.
From an initial inspection, the lead/rhythm circuit switch appears to be a replacement. The high E string tuner looks to be a period correct older Yamaha tuner, however it is a slightly different model that accepts the string differently at the post. The bridge is missing 2 of the 12 saddle height adjustment screws, and some of the screws/springs looks like they are likely replacements. The nut also looks to be a newer replacement (we recommend replacing this). Otherwise this guitar does appear to retain its originality.
We are selling this how we found it, this is a really cool project that has been on the backburner for a long time, and its time we let this one go to someone else who will get this guitar in the playing condition it deserves. We are selling this guitar as-is in project condition, and the buyer will assume risk. Much of the electronic crackles and such could likely be fixed by replacing some of the pots with newer components, however given this guitars originality we wanted to leave that decision to the player.
TLDR: Scratchy wheel, higher action, imperfect intonation, some fret wear. Needs general setup, and potentially some electronics components replaced. Its all here - just needs some love and care we do not have time for at the moment.
Cosmetically, it does show a fair bit of wear with plenty of dings, chips, scratches, and discoloration on the body and neck. Please see pictures for further detail.
