This is a rarely seen 1982 SG-75 AY from the Burny Artist series which was their unofficial Angus Young from AC/DC model. This model didn't show up in the Burny catalogs until 1983, so this could be one of the earliest SG-75 AY's ever produced - possibly in 1981?
The SG-75 AY model was originally released around 1982/1983, with the normal SG trapezoid inlays like this one, but was then later updated in 1984 to match Angus's SG with the lightning bolt inlays. Both versions are incredibly rare to see, and I'm not sure how many were built and then how many of those have survived the last 45-ish years.
What's crazy about this, is that Burny released their Angus Young model before Gibson did - as far as I can tell. Greco also made an Angus Young model in 1982.
This particular SG was made in the famous Kasuga factory, which was the factory responsible for Heerby brand guitars, along with early Navigators from ESP. You can see the similarities in the control cavity, pickup routes, electronics used, inlays, and the woods used.
Sine there's no serial number on this (on the back of the headstock, bottom of the fretboard, OR inside the bridge pickup cavity) I am dating it based on the pot codes, which all have 1981 date codes (May, June and November), so this guitar was likely made at the very end of 1981 or early 1982 model, possibly released in 1982 or 1983.
This guitar arrived with the ABR bridge wire missing, so I installed a new one. It also arrived with the original nickel humbucker covers missing (exposing the reverse zebra bobbins), as well as the original truss rod cover with "Judas Priest Glenn Tipton" scratched into it. Since it's the original truss rod cover, I left it as is, but if you want a new All Parts bell shaped truss rod installed, just let me know and I can take care of that for you.
Other than those items, everything else on this guitar appears to be original, and this guitar is in good player grade condition.
This SG has been played, and the Wine Red finish has typical fine scratches and swirling, and a couple dings, dents and chips here and there, but nothing major - to me that just adds to the mojo. This is no Murphy lab - it's the real deal, and has the right amount of mojo without being abused.
This Burny SG is made with a 1 piece mahogany neck with a dark brown rosewood fretboard, mated to 2 piece centre-seam mahogany body. The wood selection on this one is excellent, and it makes a light weight SG coming it at 6.70lbs.
The neck itself has a thin carve to it down low that gets a little more substantial up the neck, starting out at 20.8mm thick at the 1st fret and making its way up to 24.1mm at the 12th fret, but the nut is narrow at only 40.1mm wide, just like Angus's main SG was during this era. Pair the narrow nut with a thin carve neck and makes it really comfortable and fast to play - if you like narrow necks, you'll love this one. This one also features a incredibly beautiful and dark brown rosewood fretboard that has a lovely grain all the way up the board, along with acrylic pearloid trapezoid inlays. What's also rare is this model has very small fret edge binding - which is one of the only Burny SG models to have this.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have been played, and there is some play wear on frets 1-12 mainly on the plains strings, but nothing that causes the strings to get stuck or buzz. These frets look like they might have been leveled before - although they look the same as other SG-75AY models I have owned. The frets have been cleaned and polished, the fretboard cleaned and oiled, and it plays well up and down the entire neck.
The original humbuckers, which I think might be L8000's, sound fantastic - they can cover almost any genre well. Similar to another Kasuga made Burny SG I have owned, there is a good amount of low end in this guitar, but still present mids and smooth high end. They can clean up when you roll off the volume, but can easily push your amp into break up - just like Angus does. Since the covers are removed, it's easy to see the the AlNiCo magnets that power these humbuckers.
The plastics are all in tact, with some heavier pick marks on the pickguard and typical swirling on all of the plastics.
All the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.
I setup all my Gibson style guitars to Gibson factory specs - including neck relief, action, pickup height, intonation, and tailpiece height. So this guitar will be ready to play out of the box (after you tune it up - I ship my guitars with the strings loosened).
Comes with a new quality made Profile G05TX gig bag.
Overall, this is an incredibly rare SG from Japan that is built well, plays great, and sounds awesome.
This is the perfect guitar to add to your collection if you're an Angus Young or AC/DC fan - grab it today!
CONDITION ------------
Overall it's in very good player grade shape.
I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos and in the description.
The bridge saddle wire is not original. The humbucker covers are missing.
The original truss rod cover with "Judas Priest Glenn Tipton" scratched into it. Since it's the original truss rod cover, I left it as is, but if you want a new All Parts bell shaped truss rod installed, just let me know and I can take care of that for you.
Over the entire body of the guitar, top, back, sides, neck and headstock, there are some dings, dents, scratches, chips, and swirling, although nothing major.
There are a few small dents and scratches on the back of neck.
There is a medium sized ship in the finish on the lower horn.
There is a hole in the body by the heel - likely for a relocated strap button.
The nickel hardware, bridge, tailpiece, pickup pole pieces, chrome tuners, and screws all have some form of corrosion, pitting, scratches, and/or rust, although they all have a nice and consistent patina to them, and all have been cleaned and polished so they feel smooth to the touch - what you see is the patina in the metal. Everything works as expected.
All of the black and cream plastics have some heavier scratches and swirling on them.
All of the unbranded chrome Schaller style tuners are straight and work properly.
Around the strap buttons there's some minor strap marks/swirling.
The 22 medium jumbo frets have been played, and there is some play wear on frets 1-12 mainly on the plain strings. The frets have been cleaned and polished, the fretboard cleaned and oiled, and it plays well up and down the entire neck.
The truss rod works as expected with room in both directions.
There are no signs of a headstock or heel repair.
