Authentic mid 1970's Marshall Model 1987 50W Lead head, from the early metal panel transition era. This is a strong, player-grade original amp with highly desirable period-correct components and classic late-plexi tone.

Internally, the amp retains its original small-board PCB layout from the early ‘70s transition period. The signal path components appear largely original, including Philips “mustard” capacitors and carbon film resistors—key contributors to the warm, dynamic Marshall sound. Wiring and lead dress are clean and consistent with factory spec.

Correct Lead-spec configuration is confirmed (including proper cathode bypass cap), despite Marshall’s common practice of shared chassis between Lead (1987) and Bass (1986) models during this era.

Condition:  

Well-maintained and fully functional. Electrolytic capacitors have been serviced as needed for reliability, but the core amp, internal tag, and primary components remain original.

A 1970s Marshall amplifier with a "B" prefix (B256) indicates production in 1971. Marshall utilized a letter-coded system during this era, where C = 1971, D = 1972, E = 1973, F = 1974, G = 1975, H = 1976, J = 1977, K = 1978, and L = 1979. The "B" in "B256" likely denotes the year 1971 rather than A (1969-70) or C (1971)

Tone:  

Classic early ‘70s Marshall character—thick mids, smooth top end, and less harshness than later JMP models. A great example of a transitional-era amp that still carries strong plexi DNA.

Not museum-grade due to routine servicing, but an excellent player-grade vintage Marshall with high-value original components and authentic tone.
