The "D-41" was designed by Martin's public relations/researcher Mike Longworth and production began in 1969. It was created to meet the demand for a D-28 with added embellishments rather than searching for the rare and expensive D-45, and it is a model with its own unique character as an intermediate model between the 28 and 45. This particular instrument is a used 1976 model. It is a well-played player's gear with a great sound. It features a spruce top, Indian rosewood sides and back, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, abalone hexagon fingerboard inlay, Grover "milk bottle" gold tuners, abalone top trim and rosette, mosaic backstrip, square neck truss rod, large rosewood plate, and non-scalloped X-bracing. The pickguard has been replaced with a beveled black pickguard. It has a core, expansive, and powerful sound. While possessing a different kind of brilliance than the "45," it has a robust and masculine sound. It has been played well and produces a crisp, clear, and pleasing sound with well-rounded edges. There are some repairs due to use. There is a repaired crack in the neck at the base of the headstock, but it does not seem to be a concern for current use and appears to be minor. There are cracks and repairs due to shrinkage in the fingerboard binding. There are repairs to wear on the bridge plate due to string balls digging in. The top surface of the bridge is slightly thinner due to grinding. All of these are within the range that can be expected from use and age, and there are no fatal flaws, and it is in good condition to be used. The original finish with dense weather checking has a lot of character. There is some picking wear around the soundhole and some small scratches and dents, but there are no wood cracks in the body and it is in good condition. The bracing is also original, so you can enjoy the sound of that era. The neck has been reset and maintains a comfortable action. A strap pin has been added to the neck heel, and there is a history of pickup installation, with a 12mm modification at the end (currently a conversion pin is installed). While there are signs of repair history and use, this instrument has been played extensively and has a great sound. This is a guitar that you'll want to play hard. Hard case included.
