Notes: Super cool, playable as it sits, could use someone that knows more than me to give it a small bit of TLC and I believe it will play excellent for what it is. Completely playable over the entire fingerboard.
Depression Era Homemade Tenor Banjo – Graniteware “Frying Pan” Body – Waverly Tailpiece – Very Playable
With Vintage Metal Case Pictured
Description:
Offered here is a truly unique and very playable Depression-era homemade tenor banjo, dating to approximately the late 1920s or 1930s.
This is a genuine piece of American folk craftsmanship. Built at a time when many musicians couldn’t afford factory instruments, this banjo was constructed using available materials and real period hardware. The body is made from an actual piece of enamel (graniteware) cookware, giving it the unmistakable “frying pan” appearance and a character you simply won’t find in modern instruments.
Instead of a traditional skin or plastic head, this banjo features a solid metal top, secured with screws. The result is a distinctive tone—bright, punchy, and raw—with plenty of volume and personality. It’s not just a conversation piece—it’s a functional instrument that still plays today.
It is fitted with a vintage Waverly tailpiece stamped “PATENT APPLIED FOR,” along with period-style friction tuners and a simple wooden bridge. The headstock features a small decorative pearl inlay typical of the 1920s–30s, adding a subtle touch of style.
You can almost picture its origin: someone, nearly a century ago, wanting to make music and building their own instrument from what they had on hand. A kitchen pan, a handful of parts, and a lot of determination—and the result is something that has survived the decades and still works.
Condition: Shows honest wear consistent with age, including oxidation and finish wear. Structurally solid and playable. Please review photos for details.
This is a one-of-a-kind instrument—no two are alike.
Perfect for:
- Players looking for a unique tone
- Folk and Americana collectors
- Studio or recording use
- Display with real historical character
The included case is period correct, probably the original to this instrument, but very cosmetically challenged. It works, but no handle and very little padding. Either way its a proper fit and has a perfectly matched patina for this awesome banjo!
