The Roland M-GS64 is a 1U rackmount General MIDI / GS sound module released in 1995. It is essentially a rack version of the Sound Canvas SC-88, using the same PCM sound engine and patch set.

These modules were widely used in mid-1990s MIDI production, including:

  • PC game soundtracks
  • MIDI file playback systems
  • studio sequencing rigs
  • karaoke and MIDI arranger setups

Because it shares the SC-88 sound set, anything designed for that module will sound essentially the same on the M-GS64.

Production Years

  • Released: 1995
  • Production span: approximately 1995–1998

This places it in the middle of Roland’s Sound Canvas generation of General MIDI hardware.

Core Technical Specifications

  • Polyphony: 64 voices
  • Multitimbral: 32 parts
  • Preset tones: 654
  • Drum kits: 24
  • User sounds: 256
  • Sound format: GM + Roland GS
  • Effects: reverb, chorus, delay, EQ
  • Sample format: 18-bit PCM @ 32 kHz

These specs were identical to the SC-88 Sound Canvas, which is why the M-GS64 is often described as the rack version of the SC-88 engine.

Games Known to Use SC-88 / Sound Canvas Sounds

Because the M-GS64 uses the same engine, these titles would produce essentially the same sound when played through it.

Nintendo / console titles

Examples where SC-88 sounds were used during music production or playback:

  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996)
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (1995)
  • Kirby’s Avalanche (1995)
  • Kirby Air Ride (2003)
  • Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land (2002)

These games used specific instrument samples from the Sound Canvas palette.

PC DOS / Windows MIDI game music

Many 1990s PC games supported Roland Sound Canvas (GM/GS) modules, which the M-GS64 can emulate perfectly.

Common examples include:

  • Doom
  • Doom II
  • Descent
  • Warcraft II
  • Transport Tycoon
  • Duke Nukem 3D

These titles typically had a “General MIDI” or “Roland Sound Canvas” audio option.

MIDI Song / Sequencing Use

The module was also widely used for:

  • Standard MIDI File playback (SMF)
  • karaoke MIDI systems
  • studio sequencing (Cubase, Cakewalk, etc.)
  • demo and arrangement production

The Sound Canvas sound set became the de-facto reference for General MIDI playback during the 199
