This is a rarely seen 1989 Greco SS-70S model (SG Special), from the end of the Greco Mint Collection series, in White (WH) finish that has faded heavily to a creamy yellow colour. Greco lists the finish on this model as Urethane, which I think is why these models can fade to this creamy yellow colour so much compared to their polyester finished guitars.
With 3 original Greco Hot Lick P-90 pickups, a larger "bat wing" pickguard, ABR bridge and stop tailpiece, and neck binding with dot inlays, this guitar is like an SG Special, SG Classic and SG3 mixed together.
This particular Greco appears to be all original, and in good player grade condition. There are many dings & dents, chips, scratches and swirling all over the guitar - although a lot of it is hidden thanks to the creamy yellow finish.
When the guitar arrived to me, there was a large chip in the neck by the binding - the binding had cracked as well - like something had fallen onto the neck. That chip and binding crack has been filled with Glu Boost Fill n' Finish and has been sanded and buffed smooth to the touch - you can't feel it when playing, or see it since it's on the bottom side of the neck.
The gold hardware has some pretty heavy pitting, corrosion and some rust in areas. But overall, this guitar has lots of mojo, and still looks, plays, and sounds amazing!
These original Greco Hot Lick P-90 pickups sound fantastic - they are very creamy, with a fast attack and a full warm sound with a rounded bottom end, lots of mids, and a smooth top end.
The 3 way switch toggles between:
- Bridge pickup only
- Bridge and middle (in parallel and out of phase with each other)
- Neck pickup only
The bridge volume knob controls both the bridge and middle pickup volume, and the neck volume knob controls the neck pickup volume. The tone knobs control the tone respectively.
When in the middle position, these pickups are out of phase with each other, and in parallel with each other, giving this a very sparkly and lower output single coil tone - similar to a Tele or Strat.
The mahogany (likely 1 piece) neck on this guitar is a comfortable C shape carve. It's a wide SG neck with a down the middle neck carve - it's not super thin and not super thick, starting out at 22.2mm at the 1st fret, and making its way up to 23.3mm at the 12th fret. It has a light brown rosewood fretboard, with silver acrylic dot inlays.
The original 22 medium jumbo frets have been played, but not much, with only light play wear on the lower 1-5 frets, and overall there's lots of life left in them, and this guitar plays well up and down the entire fretboard.
All the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.
I setup all my Gibson style guitars to Gibson factory specs - including neck relief, action, pickup height, intonation, and tailpiece height. So this guitar will be ready to play out of the box (after you tune it up - I ship my guitars with the strings loosened).
Comes with a new quality made Profile G05TX gig bag.
Overall, this is a very rare and fantastic vintage Greco SG - it looks awesome, plays well, and sounds awesome with it's own vibe.
If you're looking for a super rare Japanese SG, you'll love this Greco SS. This is the type of guitar that belongs on a stage. I know I'm going to regret selling this one!
CONDITION ------------
Overall it's in good player grade shape.
I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos - although there are lots.
The bridge tone knob cap is missing.
Over the entire body of the guitar, top, back, sides, neck and headstock, there are many dings, dents, scratches, chips, and swirling in the finish.
There was a large chip in the finish on the back of the neck that has been drop filled, sanded, and buffed smooth - so it feels completely smooth to the touch, and you cannot feel it while playing (or see it since it's on the bottom side of the neck).
There is a typical superficial finish crack at the heel of the neck all the way around the heel. This is only in the finish, and the neck joint is solid and stable.
The gold hardware, bridge, tailpiece, jack, tuners, pickup pole pieces and screws have some significant pitting, corrosion and rust on them, but overall everything works properly, and the patina is consistent across the guitar.
The black paint on the headstock has some chips and swirling to it.
The white pickguard has many typical surface scratches and pick marks.
The black pickup covers, truss rod cover have typical light scratches on them. The rear control panel cover still has the original protective paper on it (now faded heavily).
Around the strap buttons there's strap marks/swirling.
The frets have been played, but still have lots of life left in them.
The original gold tuners are all straight and function properly.
The truss rod works as expected (Gibson style nut) and has room in both directions.
The bridge screws and saddles all work fine, and the intonation has been set.
