This is a 1979 Ibanez 2680 Bob Weir Professional model in the rarely seen Brown Sunburst (BS) finish. These are fairly common in the Natural finish, but the Brown Sunburst (BS) and Antique Violin (AV) finishes are both very rare to see. And I've gotta say, this is one of the most beautiful looking instruments I've ever had - the shape, the curves, the colour, the wood grain, everything is just beautiful on this 2680.
The 2680 model was essentially the same model as Bob Weir's 2681 model, except this one has abalone dot inlays rather than the vine inlays. The construction, electronics, and hardware are all the same - just the fretboard inlays differ.
Bob Weir was not only an incredible musician, he was also a vital part of the Ibanez story - and this guitar was his vision.
Other than the cloud ornament missing below the tailpiece, and the Sure Grip rubber missing on the bridge volume knob, everything else on this guitar appears to be original, and this guitar is in fair players grade condition.
I consider this guitar to be fair players grade condition because this guitar has been played - a lot. The frets on this guitar are quite worn across the fretboard, especially in the 1-9 frets on the plain strings. When you play the 7th fret on the high E, it rings, but if you bend it passed a semi tone, it will choke a little bit. The frets on this guitar are jumbo (for the time) coming in around 1.3mm tall and 2.9mm wide. I measure the lowest divots to be about 1.15mm, so there should be lots of room left to level these frets - or you could replace them all with the frets of your choice.
This model does not have fret edge binding, like the 2680 models from 1978 or earlier. And although I'll admit that fret edge binding is a nice feature, when re-fretting, it increases the price (if you want to keep the fret edge binding).
As you would expect to see on a guitar that has been played this much, there are many dings, dents, and scratches over the entire guitar, along with a few chips in the finish, and some light checking here and there - but nothing major that affects the tone or playability, and no signs of a heel or headstock crack or repair. This guitar has been played, but not abused.
All of the gold/brass hardware including the Gibraltar bridge, tailpiece, covers, pickup covers, screws and tuners are all heavily worn, with varying degrees of tarnish, pitting, peeling, corrosion and/or rust, but everything works as expected, and there is still shine left in most spots.
Both of the black pickup rings have cracked, but have been glued back together so they function as they should (holding the pickups in place and allowing the player to adjust the pickup height). One of the corners on the neck pickup ring has cracked off.
The 3 piece hard rock maple laminated neck is a joy to play on - it's on the thicker side (although not too thick) starting at 23.0mm at the 1st fret and making its way to 24.0mm by the 12th fret, and it wide and relatively flat in the hands. This guitar has a a very dark ebony fretboard with abalone dot inlays.
The original Ibanez Super 80 humbuckers, with the original "Flying Fingers" gold covers, are high output, clear, bright and articulate sounding. They can be very expressive and dynamic. The volume and tone pots are very interactive on this guitar, and you can recreate many tones you're looking for. Both pickups have a 190423 date stamp on the baseplates indicating a date of April 23rd 1979.
All the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.
Comes with the original hard case with green interior. This case is definitely in used condition. All of the hinges and latches are in tact and work, but there is heavy corrosion on the hardware. There are some rips in the exterior tolex/vinyl, along with staining. But the case works, and matches the vibe of the guitar.
Overall, this is a rarely seen vintage Ibanez model in one of the nicest finishes you can find.
If you're looking for a 2680 that is hard to come by, grab this one today!
CONDITION ------------
Overall it's in fair player grade shape.
I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos and in the description - if you want more photos or details just let me know.
The cloud tailpiece ornament is missing. The original mounting screws are in place.
The Sure Grip rubber grip on the bridge volume knob is missing.
Across the entire body, top, back side, neck, and headstock, there are numerous dings, dents, scratches, and swirling in the lacquer finish.
There is a larger chip in the finish on the top of the body by the lower bass side bout.
There is a larger scratch or crack/checking in the finish by the selector switch.
There are some chips in the finish on the back of the headstock volute - looks like wear from a guitar hanger. There is a chip that appears to have been filled. There are no signs of a headstock crack or repair.
There is a chip in the finish on the high E side of the headstock by the nut, along with a hairline crack in the finish.
There is some typical buckle rash on the back of the body.
There is an extra hole on the side of the low E side horn - looks like it was for a strap button.
The binding is all in tact, but there is some cracking in the cutouts where the binding is thickest.
The words/script on the control panel have worn off.
Both of the black pickup rings have cracked, but have been glued back together so they function as they should (holding the pickups in place and allowing the player to adjust the pickup height). One of the corners on the neck pickup ring has cracked off.
All of the original Ibanez Velve-Tune gold tuners are working properly, and tune smoothly. The original tool to adjust the tension of the tuners is included.
Around the strap buttons there's heavy strap marks/swirling.
The 22 jumbo frets have been played a lot across the entire fretboard, and especially from frets 1-9. The notes can choke out when bending around the 7th fret. This guitar would need a partial or full fret level, or a refret to play its best.
There's no signs of a headstock, heel or any other repair.
The truss rod works as expected with room in both directions.
