The "D-41" was designed by Martin public relations and researcher Mike Longworth and began production in 1969. Born out of a desire to add a decorative touch to a D-28 rather than pursue the scarce and expensive D-45, it offers a unique, middle-of-the-road feel between the 28 and 45. This instrument is a pre-owned 1972 model. Features include a German spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, a mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, original USA Grover gold tuning machines, abalone inlay rosette and trim, D-41-style hexagonal fingerboard positions, a vertical headstock logo, square rods, and non-scalloped X-bracing. The pickguard has been replaced with a tortoiseshell pickguard. From its introduction until 1974, German spruce was used for the top, setting it apart from the Sitka spruce tops used the following year. The 40 series was a coveted symbol of popularity during the folk music boom, but its high price as an imported guitar meant many could not afford it. With its gorgeous appearance and elegant sound, some have been waiting for an opportunity to own a Martin. The thick, sweet, and resilient response is something only a German spruce top can offer, setting it apart from later Sitka spruce tops. The non-scalloped X bracing and SQ rods provide a strong core and rich tone, exuding a unique character that differs from modern guitars, especially in the richness of the low end. A strap pin has been installed next to the neck heel, and a crack has been repaired from the bottom of the pickguard to underneath, with internal reinforcement. The saddle is adjusted as low as possible, but the string height is slightly high. Weathering is evenly distributed across the top, creating a beautiful appearance. While there are some scratches and dents, the guitar is in good condition considering its age, suggesting it has been well-used. Considering that German-top 45s have already reached a prohibitive price tag, the 41 is a viable alternative. Includes original Martin blue case.
