1993 Fender Japan '72 Telecaster Custom (TC72) in Ocean Turquoise Metallic (OTM)—the rare early FujiGen iteration of the color, which is much darker than the common CIJ iteration.

Manufactured at the FujiGen factory in Japan. "S" serial, with pots dated 1993. This is the only TC72 order I've seen in OTM, with only one other example surfacing in the past decade.

100% functional without issues.

Condition
Cosmetically the 30+ year old instrument is in good shape, with various dings, chips, scratches, and finish wear commensurate with age. Minor finish crack on bass side of neck pocket. Pickguard has pick markings from play. Chrome hardware has patina. Handful of large chips on body.

Frets have some wear. No major divots/fretting out/buzzing/etc. Back of neck has been sanded to a satin/matte finish. (While not professionally done, it feels good while playing and is smooth overall, with some visual imperfections upon scrutinization, shown in the photos.)

- Bridge volume and tone pots replaced
- Bone nut
- Back of neck sanded to matte finish

FujiGen's OTM: 1991–1992
Fender Japan’s FujiGen-era Ocean Turquoise Metallic (OTM) is somewhat of an enigma. Its first and only catalog photo appearance occurs in the 1992 Twang catalog, one of several “new” metallic colors showcased on the limited run ST-50V Stratocaster. The photo closely resembles the original 1965 Ford paint color, or even an aged vintage Fender—considerably darker than the more common 2000’s “Crafted in Japan” iteration.

OTM was still listed (not shown) as an available color in the first issue of the 1993 catalog, yet disappeared in “Volume 2”, seemingly replaced by another metallic color—Shoreline Gold (SRG). Perhaps demand was low, the same fate OTM met 20 years prior in the US.

As one might expect, the most common example in circulation today is the aforementioned ST-50V (sometimes marked “ST-500V”). Having aged 30 years, the finishes have yellowed considerably to resemble Sherwood Green (SGM), and are typically listed as such. (SGM was never listed, nor appeared as an available color in the catalog. It was only put into production post-2015, after the dissolution Fender Japan, Ltd.)

OTM finally reappeared a decade later, during the Dyna era in the 2003 catalog as part of the “Color Collections”, with the stock photographs appearing just slightly more luminous than the FujiGen version. In 2005, examples became much lighter, closely resembling the contemporary OTM offering from Fender.
