1972 Gibson ES-355 TDSV – Walnut – Mono Conversion by Glaser Instruments

This is a 1972 Gibson ES-355 TDSV in Walnut, originally purchased from Rumble Seat during their New York era. The guitar was later professionally converted from stereo to mono by Glaser Instruments (Nashville), making it far more practical for modern use while preserving the integrity and character of the instrument.

Background & History

The ES-355 was Gibson’s top-of-the-line semi-hollow model, sitting above the ES-335 and ES-345. In 1972, these guitars were shipped with stereo wiring and a Varitone circuit, which many players find limiting in real-world use.

This example has been professionally converted to straight mono by Glaser Instruments. Importantly:

  • The Varitone circuit remains fully functional
  • The original stereo wiring harness is included in the case

The conversion results in a clearer, more reliable signal path and easier amp/pedal compatibility, while preserving the option to return the guitar to full stereo spec if desired.

Specs & Features

Tone & Feel

The original T-Top humbuckers deliver classic early-’70s Gibson tones — articulate cleans, strong midrange presence, and smooth, defined overdrive.

With the mono conversion, the guitar feels more immediate and usable in modern setups while still retaining the tonal shaping capability of the Varitone circuit. This is a true player’s ES-355 with collector-level consideration preserved.

Summary

  • Purchased from Rumble Seat (NY era)
  • Professionally converted to mono by Glaser Instruments
  • Varitone fully functional
  • Original stereo wiring included
  • Retains premium ES-355 appointments

A high-end vintage Gibson semi-hollow that balances originality with practicality.
