Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a classic older general purpose microphone made by Electro Voice in the 1950's. This is the earlier 2nd generation 630 that has the polished chrome housing and looks very nice. It functions perfectly with a strong 100% signal and set at high impedance. It comes with the unique Cannon XLR adapter and XLR cable in which to operate.

Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old E.V catalog I have showing the mics basic characteristics.

Pic # 3 shows Jerry Lee Lewis using one of these very mics. Probably used an E.V 630 singing Great balls of Fire at some point in his career.

You'll notice right away that this 630 was modified many years ago by a previous owner. Cannon sold adapters for microphones such as this 630 to convert to the XLR connection. The small Cannon adapter was properly installed and it works like a charm but it should be noted that when the person installed the XLR connector / adapter they changed the schematic slightly and the # 3 pin is positive on the mic instead of # 2. I had to custom build cable provided so that it would work properly with the mic. You won't have any issues with the cable on your audio equipment but you have to use the cable provided as again, the hot pin is # 3, not # 2. If you use a standard XLR cable on this mic is simply won't work due to the schematic of the mics wiring. The XLR adapter does make the mic far more practical however.

The 630 mic was typically used for dispatch and broadcasting purposes but was even used for singing for live events. These happen to make excellent harp mics today however due to it's dirtier higher pitched tone being void of bass. You get a dirty, gritty sound that a lot of musicians and harp players like. Very old school and "rockabilly". It's an omni-directional mic as well.

The mic housing / head is reminiscent of the jet engines being used by several American and Soviet fighter planes of the 1940's and 50's. The look was very popular but by the 1960's the look was dated and just not as popular as the earlier models were.

The 70 + year old microphone has typical lite wear as you can see in pictures mostly in the form of a few scuff marks and tiny scratches. The threads for the stand are perfect with zero stripping. The E.V label looks pretty nice and completely legible. Overall this piece is an easy 8 + on a scale of 1 - 10. Again, it works like new and will do you justice.

The joint mechanism works fine with plenty of tension. The on / off switch works great as well.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.

The mic comes with a shorter cable that is appx 10 feet in length and has the standard male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment and all guitar amplifiers. The cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. No exterior stains.

As with all my vintage microphones for sale...
