Martin / 1972 D-41
Introduced in 1969, the D-41 was a cost-saving model that toned down the decoration of the D-45.
Although the cost was reduced, the quality of the wood remained the same, and by reducing the decoration of the abalone shell, you can enjoy the rich, resonant tone of Martin's highest-end 40 series.
—Spruce harvested in central Europe
The top is made of German spruce.
This spruce is known for its hardness and rich overtones, making it one of the premium woods used in string instruments such as violins.
The body edges are accented with white cellophane and abalone shell purfling for a beautiful finish.
There is a dent on the top right (above the pickguard) that has been repaired, but it has been beautifully restored.
The rosette is also decorated with colorful abalone shells.
The sides and back are made of straight-grained Indian rosewood.
The rosewood material was changed around 1970, but the beautiful striped pattern of the wood used makes it hard to tell.
The absence of abalone shells on the sides and back is a difference from the D-45.
The fingerboard is crafted from ebony and features abalone shell hexagonal inlays with a beautiful pattern that rivals that of the D-45.
The edges of the fingerboard are also adorned with white binding.
The mahogany neck features a V-shaped profile for a comfortable fit.
The neck is neither too thick nor too thin, ensuring comfortable playability.
The bridge, like the fingerboard, is made of ebony and features short saddles.
The bridge pins are white, and the abalone shell dots are also visible.
The rosewood-veneered headstock features a vertical logo (commonly known as the "vertical logo"), symbolizing the pinnacle of quality, and the rounded corners of the headstock shape are characteristic of this period.
The tuning machines are 102, bearing the Grover patent.
The smooth gears provide a comfortable tuning experience.
The D-41 is not a cheaper version of the D-45, but is ideal for players who find the D-45 too resonant.
However, its rich, resonant tone is perhaps one of the defining features of a Martin 40 series guitar.
