This “sandwich” structure dramatically increased stiffness-to-weight ratio, allowing the top to vibrate more freely and project more efficiently. Pioneering luthiers in Germany and the U.S. refined the method, and the design quickly spread through high-end classical and later steel-string craftsmanship.
