This is a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard, in natural finish, with original case, original electronics, and modified hardware. It has bumps and dings, but no neck breaks or other significant repairs.
This guitar has survived through more than 4 decades of rocking, and multiple owners, and it is now looking for its new home, to rock out into the future.
WARNING: This guitar weighs nearly 11 LBS!! (10lbs:15.6oz)
Think of this as your new gym membership! If you are not ready to bear an 11 LB guitar on your shoulder, then PLEASE do NOT consider getting this guitar.
Here is a detailed breakdown of the condition:
- The serial number and "Made In U.S.A." are stamped on the back of the headstock (the full s/n is not shown in the photos).
- The frets have possibly been milled previously, they are shorter than a modern era Gibson LP, feeling much more like a "fretless wonder". The frets currently show little wear, and the guitar plays well, but if you do not like shorter frets, then please do not consider getting this guitar.
- At some point in time the nut appears to have been replaced, the current nut is bone, and is working properly. There is a scratch on the fingerboard near the nut.
- The finish and electronics, pots, switch, pickups, appear to be either all original, or period correct. It is impossible to 100% confirm if it just had some "Norlin Era" soldering, or if at one time they were actually changed and then changed back. However, the pots all have the same date and model codes, indicating 1978, and the pickups are the era-correct "patent no." pickups.
- The finish has its share of belt buckle rash, dings and finish checking that you might expect from a guitar of this age that has been played by professional musicians for decades. We have tried to document most of it, but some of the dings and checking are hard to capture in a photo. There are also some marks in the finish on the headstock from a display hook.
- Some of the inlays appear to have been re-glued (that or it's just a "Norlin Era" job, haha).
- The tuners, bridge, and tailpiece, have all been changed multiple times. At one time (likely in the 80s, LOL!), it likely had some kind of a tremolo tailpiece installed, and string trees installed on the G and B strings, and also replacement tuners. Since that time (and long before we acquired the guitar), the tailpiece stud inserts have been professionally repaired, and stock style hardware installed, including a set of vintage era correct Gibson tuners, a Gotoh featherweight aluminum tailpiece, and a Tonepros/Gotoh tune-o-matic bridge with locking posts. There are still imprints and holes remaining in the headstock from the previous tuner and string tree changes.
- The current strap buttons are Schaller Style Strap-Lock buttons, and a used set of Fender branded Locks are included.
- The control knobs appear to be original, with one of them missing the top insert. The switch washer, pickup rings, and the pickguard appear to be either original, or are period correct.
- The switch tip was replaced in our shop with the Gibson replacement part.
- Includes original Gibson hardshell case.
- We'll mention it one more time, this guitar weighs 10LBS and 15.6OZ, that's just shy of 11LBS!
- The pickups and electronics sound absolutely amazing, the current hardware is solid, it is very resonant, the guitar plays and sounds great, and it is gig ready.
This guitar has been in the private collection of a local SF bay area professional musician for the last 15 years, and it is now looking for a new home where it will continue to rock!
We have done our best to take photos of all the various bumps and dings, and to detail which parts appear to be original, and which ones are modified, to the very best of our knowledge. We cannot 100% guarantee that we've detailed everything, or gotten all the info 100% correct, as we are not the original owners of this guitar, and it has lived a lifetime already in other people's hands.
Please reach out with any questions or concerns that you may have, or if you need any further information, details, or photos.
Rock on!!
