A cardioid pickup pattern rejects sound originating from the back and sides, putting the focus where you point it. The SD-1 is ideal for close-miked vocals and offers a switchable articulation boost between 3 and 5 kHz where the human voice sits. There's also a selectable low cut filter to reduce rumble from various sources like the truck in the alley.

The SD-1 also makes a great live performance microphone thanks to its cardioid pattern and internal shockmount that rejects noise transferred from mic stands. A built-in windscreen hepls reduce plosives (hard consonants) and breath noise when you're going all in for the performance.
