1979 Music Man StingRay Bass Sunburst, 100% Original, Collector’s Grade

Up for sale is an exceptional 1979 Music Man StingRay Bass in its original Sunburst finish, complete with its original black Tolex hard shell case. This is not a reissue but an original late-’70s example, representing Leo Fender’s first major design after departing from Fender, a true milestone in electric bass history.

The StingRay was Leo’s reinvention of the electric bass, introducing the now-iconic humbucking pickup and active electronics that set a new standard for tone, punch, and versatility. This example features an ash body paired with an all-maple neck, weighing in at 10.2 lbs, right in the range typical for this era.

The bass is completely all original and in excellent condition, showing only light, honest playwear consistent with its age. The finish has aged beautifully, and the hardware retains its original sheen. The neck is smooth and comfortable, the truss rod functions perfectly, and the electronics work flawlessly, delivering the unmistakable StingRay sound: deep, articulate, and powerful.

This is a collector-grade example that also performs exceptionally well as a player’s instrument. The original black Tolex case remains in excellent condition and rounds out this remarkable vintage package.

This instrument has been meticulously preserved and is priced for the collector who understands its rarity and historical significance. It ships to the continental US and select international destinations.
