In the world of guitars, there are very few, if any, that hold the type of prestige as an L-5. Regarded by many as the greatest arch top in the world, early examples have been the pinnacle of many collections, as well as featured by players of all genres. Features like the upper register cutaway seen on examples like this, as well as the natural "blonde" finish only increase the value and wow-factor that these guitars have earned.

This example dates accurately to 1947, with its white Kalamazoo label and serial, A813. The "Advanced" 17" top is constructed out of very nice wide grained spruce, fully bound with 7 ply white/black binding. The sides of flamed maple have impressive three dimensional flame, notable on these rare blonde examples - the back, with flame and extensive Birdseye. Internally, it features the simple two tone bar bracing, achieving a nice woody tone that yields nice volume. Cosmetically, this example is clean with very minor finish nicks on its top and a small finish chip near the treble side f hole - some expected checking is present. Structurally, this is in very clean condition with no extensive past repairs aside a re-fret (see below). The rounded cutaway, known as the "Premier" model was renamed L-5C only a year after this example. Original two piece rosewood bridge is in good shape, with height for adjustment. Original one piece, non-hinged, L-5 tailpiece present with Allen wrench tension adjustment functioning as it should, cosmetically in good condition less some light discoloration in the gold. A replacement 1929 brand marble pickguard is present - a nice match for this instrument, albeit leaving two holes from previous mounting hardware.

The neck is composed of two pieces of flamed maple around an ebony center strip. The neck is designed with a 25.5" scale length, and 1 11/16" nut width, the profile measuring a chunky .89" in depth at the first fret and tapering up to 1" at the twelfth fret. The fingerboard is made of ebony, seen at this time with the MOP block inlays. This has had a past refret, resulting in the original nibs to have been shaved down, the work expertly done a long time ago, it retains clean frets that have even level wear and a solid "Gibson" feel to them. The neck is nice and straight with an appropriate neck angle, yielding in a nice tall saddle with room to move at its thumb screws - the action measuring a comfortable 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret. Gold Kluson seal fast tuners present and functional, in clean condition with slightly shrunken celluloid buttons. The headstock veneer is clean with expected checking. The MOP fat script Gibson logo in aged pearl with decorative flower pot. Replaced truss rod cover is present, a few additional small screw holes have been added near its slot, the truss rod in functional condition.

A fantastic piece of Gibson history, ready for another playing career and certainly to be a crown jewel for many.
