Taylor Gold Label 814e Koa, Ebony Fingerboard, Sunburst Top

Taylor’s Gold Label Collection reveals a stunning old-heritage sound that’s unlike anything Taylor has ever produced — more reminiscent of flattop guitars from the 1930s and 1940s.

The guitars in the collection combine several mint design elements that contribute to the sound — a mint Super Auditorium body style, a unique V-Class-inspired bracing pattern, and a mint longtenon neck joint — plus a mint decorative aesthetic. The Gold Label Collection launches with two core models in different wood pairings: Honduran rosewood + torrefied Sitka spruce and figured Hawaiian koa + torrefied Sitka spruce. Each is offered with a choice of a natural or sunburst top.

A mint Super Auditorium shape: The proportions resemble Taylor’s Grand Auditorium, but the body is slightly longer and the lower bout is slightly wider. Taylor chief guitar designer Andy Powers describes it as having a “classically proportioned set of curves.” (Note: Because of the family resemblance of the “Auditorium” shapes, Super Auditorium model numbers will also be designated with the “4” used to signify a Grand Auditorium elsewhere in the Taylor line. But within the Gold Label Collection, the “4” will always represent a Super Auditorium body.)

mint Fanned V-Class bracing: This V-Class variant features a fan-like arrangement of braces in the soundboard’s lower bout. They are also set in place using traditional hot hide glue.

A mint long-tenon neck joint: The long-tenon’s enhanced wood coupling translates into greater low-end resonance and a sound some might compare to historic guitars featuring dovetailstyle neck joints. (But this design remains glueless and brings even easier and more precise neck angle micro-adjustability to the guitar.)

The decorative design aesthetic draws inspiration from several sources of the past including classic banjos and mandolins, early Taylor designs, and Andy’s own pre-Taylor design work on his archtop guitars.

Altered design elements include Taylor’s most iconic stylistic details: a mint headstock shape featuring an angled back cut and a reinterpretation of the Taylor logo inlay, along with a mint pickguard shape and design; The bridge borrows the elegantly contoured Curve Wing design used with the Builder’s Edition Collection, but on these guitars it’s made from Honduran rosewood rather than ebony, and incorporates bone bridge pins; A mint “Continental” inlay motif; The guitars feature a specially designed Gold Label guitar label inside the guitar, and the guitars come in a different Taylor hardshell case (featuring a mint exterior color, “British Cocoa,” with “Graphite” internal lining).

The guitar has a louder, fuller, deeper, more open sound, heavier-bodied high notes — the trebles are warmer, woodier and more rounded off, overall, a robust, muscular tone; it’s a guitar a player can really lean into, but it also produces a full-bodied tone in response to a light touch. Lastly, it retains the pitch accuracy that Andy’s V-Class architecture is known for.
