Super-Rare! Ampex 350 / 351 Quarter Inch 1/4" 3-Track Head Assembly Complete EXC

Ampex 350 / 351 quarter-inch 3-track head assembly (complete)

This is a rare original Ampex 350 / 351 3-track head assembly for **¼-inch tape**. Very few of these machines were ever built -- I only know of three! -- making this head assembly an unusual find for collectors, enthusiasts, transfer facilities or archivists.

Pulled from one of the only original Ampex 350-3 machines ever built

Quarter-inch format / 3-track configuration / Full track erase

All heads are pristine and in excellent physical condition

Includes the complete mounting assembly

Important note: The playback head appears to be a special type that does not match standard  350/351 electronics. It "worked" as Ampex shipped it with Peerless head input transformers. But it was optimized to deliver better signal to noise ratio for the 1/4" 3-track format as opposed to optimal frequency response. 

With today's tape, you will want to find a transformer better suited to this playback head. Record and erase should plug and play with unmodified 350/351 electronics.

To integrate these heads with a 350 or 351, the buyer will likely want to find the correct head input transformer or some other custom matching solution. 

There is a Minneapolis Magnetics sticker on the assembly, and the machine came from that area, but perhaps service was done by them. I am 100% certain that the 3-track heads are Ampex heads. Perhaps the erase head came from Minneapolis Magnetics? Not sure. Note that the machine came with real-deal 350-3 stamped plates as seen in the pictures. 

All heads were operable and were verified by JRF at the time I purchased the machine.
