Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a very unique and older general purpose microphone made by Electro Voice in the late 1940's. This is the early 1st generation 635 variant that has the polished polished chrome housing. It still works and looks pretty darn nice too.. It comes with the cable in which to operate.
This was the early 635 model based on the 630 that has the elongated lower pistol grip giving it a bit more character. The 635 was virtually identical to the 630 with a couple exceptions. The 635 had a dual impedance switch instead of the on / off switch giving you the option of High Impedance or Low impedance with the flick of a switch. The other difference was that the 635 had the revolutionary XLR cable attachment instead of the standard 3 pin screw on cable of that time. The XLR attachment would not become standard for microphones until the late 1970's so the 635 was ahead of it's time and was an expensive microphone because of these options.
Pic # 2 shows the 1940's era 630 model mic in an E.V catalog. Again, the 635 had the dual Z option as where the 630 had only the High Z setting. The dual Z switch on the lower pistol grips works just as it should but you'll find that the signal strength on the Hi Z setting is much stronger than the low Z setting which is normal.
The 635 was sold by E.V for about 20 years and while these are hard enough to come by the 1st gen 635 is even rarer than the 2nd gen 635 and don't come around very often. The 630 & 635 were both used for general broadcasting and could be used for singing as well with an old school "rockabilly" sound. There is virtually no bass to the tone on these 630 series mics. This early 635 isn't as strong as the later generation 635 mics but I'd rate it at about 80% compared to alter 635. it's certainly strong enough to use.
The mic housing / head is reminiscent of the jet engines being used by several American and Soviet fight planes of the day.
The 70 + year old microphone has very lite wear as you can see in pictures with fine pitting on the front of the grill and a few very lite scratches and scuff marks here and there. It's free of any dents or fractures. The chrome has a very nice luster still. The threads for the stand are perfect with zero stripping. The E.V label shows lite paint loss but still completely legible and has a beautiful patina. Overall this piece is an easy 8 on a scale of 1 - 10 physically speaking.
The joint mechanism works fine with plenty of tension and this mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have.
The 18 foot cable is included and used to operate the mic. It's soft, pliable and in excellent condition. More than enough length to work with and it has the standard male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment and all guitar amplifiers.
