With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.

 

What Does Cam Think

The vintage ‘Blackguard’ style is an iconic piece of American guitar history. We have spec’ed this Shabat Lion Standard as a homage to that classic instrument, but with some tweaks to make it play as good as it looks and sounds. A set of Lollar Vintage T pickups gets us closer to that goal, along with a resonant swamp ash body and maple neck!

The neck position Lollar Vintage T sounds exactly like you would expect it to sound in this instrument. Being Lollar’s quintessential T neck pickup, it has a juicy midrange with a rolled off top end, which works equally well with chords or single notes. It’s a beautiful vintage tonality that’s classic for a reason.

The bridge Vintage T is bright and articulate, but with the punch to still sound full. This tone makes playing single notes very satisfying, and it will push your amp just enough to have it cooking. In the middle position with both pickups working, you get this spanky scooped tone that’s great for strumming chords. Not a bad sound in this thing!

A few player-friendly nuances worth pointing out… The body edges are rounded more than on a traditional T-style, a simple touch but one that is immediately perceived and appreciated. The three-way selector switch is situated at a slight angle to make throwing back to the bridge position all that much easier. This guitar is a phenomenal take on a classic, with a few improvements thrown in.

How Does It Play

The neck is a very comfortable Medium C shape, not the big U that you typically encounter in this style of guitar. The 7.25-9.5” compound radius is perfect for the neck, making playability effortless anywhere. The string action measures right at 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string, and just under 4/64” at the 12th fret on the high E string. It may look and sound like a vintage instrument, but it plays so much better!
