This snare drum features a rare combination of materials that Yamaha no longer produces, following the company’s shift in production from Japan to China. The 8-ply beech shell, paired with a 19-ply maple wood hoop, delivers a bright, focused attack and deep, powerful low-end. These characteristics, combined with the natural resonance of the beech wood, create a balanced tone that is perfect for genres like jazz, fusion, and rock. However, Yamaha has since discontinued both beech wood drums and wood hoops, making this snare a rare collector’s piece.

The 13x7 size gives this snare drum a unique tonal profile, offering sharp articulation while still providing an unexpected depth that many smaller drums lack. The snare is responsive across a wide tuning range, allowing players to achieve both precise, clean articulations and rich, full-bodied sound.

This snare drum represents a significant moment in Yamaha’s history. Released during a period when Yamaha was experimenting with various woods, the Akira Jimbo Signature Snare Drum embodies the brand’s commitment to innovation. It’s a direct reflection of Jimbo's personal sound preferences, designed to meet the demands of his complex, dynamic drumming style. The Beech Custom series, from which this snare draws its inspiration, was one of Yamaha’s most highly regarded lines during the early 2000s.

Since its discontinuation in 2011, this snare drum has become an increasingly rare and valuable collector's item. The combination of beech wood and maple wood hoops is no longer part of Yamaha’s production, which only adds to the rarity and collectibility of this model.
