Vintage early 90s Fireglo Rickenbacker 4003 Bass Guitar
I know you've heard this before, but the photos just don't do this piece justice. It's a very beautiful instrument in person. The finish on this one really glistens! In fact, it glistens SO MUCH, please don't confuse the camera glare thinking it is imperfections or damage in the finish. It was very difficult to photograph this instrument, due to its amazingly brilliant shiny finish. There is a lot of camera glare that I couldn't do much about. Especially on the back of the body, edges, and the neck where it looks like there are strange white streaks (weird, indeed!) I assure you, that glare that you see in some of the photos is exactly that...annoying glare! Being the fact that the photos herein, serve as part of the item description, please, if you have any questions or concerns about what you are seeing, don't hesitate to request more photos of any areas you are concerned about. I'm happy to oblige!
I rated this bass at a conservative "Very Good", even though I feel it could pass as "Excellent". The reason being is because I know many of you are like me, very picky. This bass has the usual checking (very minor) in the clear coat in a few spots at the edge of the body binding and along some of the frets on the fretboard. It's a very common Rickenbacker thing that appears with age. These areas could easily be blended with a bit of clear coat and would look as new, but why? As for me, I prefer the honest patina on any vintage instrument. If you look very closely in the photos you will see what I am mentioning. I actually and purposely put a little guitar polish in those areas and let it dry so you can clearly see what I am referring to in the photos in this listing. I have since removed the dried polish with a guitar finish cleaner whereby, those checking areas are no longer as noticeable unless you are looking very closely right upon the instrument in those areas. They were near impossible to photograph without using the polish to help reveal those areas on the top edge where the strap button and the string inserts of the tailpiece are located. If you look closely at the binding just above the low E string insert of the tailpiece and the G string insert of the tailpiece you will see those ever, so slight finish checks and small clearcoat and finish chips where the binding meets the body of the bass. There are a couple more areas on the top edge of the body where the binding is located at the area where the neck meets the body. If you look very closely you will see what I'm mentioning along the white binding there, as well...you will see the dried white polish in those areas accentuating the very minor finish checking and a wee bit of clear coat that has slightly chipped on the bass side of the neck where the binding meets the body in this same area. There is a wee bit more of this on the treble side in the body binding. It's minor. Once again, after I took the photos, that dried polish was removed with a delicate guitar cleaner. You will also notice a few very minor areas where play wear is evident throughout the instrument such as including, but not limited to, various small dings, tiny finish chips, minor scrapes, a small finish chip at the strap button of the upper horn (not noticeable when a strap is on the bass) three or four small superficial surface cracks in the white body binding to the left and right where the strap button closest to the tailpiece is located, all of which is once again, very minimal and certainly common when an instrument is preowned and has been played. However, there is nothing to stress about as this bass has been lovingly maintained over the years. Nothing mentioned above effects it's play-ability or that famous Rickenbacker tone. Not to mention, it's sex appeal. This is one gorgeous example of an iconic Ric. Why you ask? Simply because the finish with its deep Reddish Burgundy, almost Purplish Eggplant hue that fades into the creamy Golden Yellow more toward the center is absolutely stunning. It's not your typical Fireglo. This one is special...and I'm not just saying that. The finish is exquisite on this one. It also has a slimmer neck and headstock than most Rics and feels so comfortable while gliding up and down the neck. Thus, also making it weigh in on the lighter side. All the great attributes of this beauty make it very difficult for me to let this one go. This baby is a joy to play. She's as good as any Rickenbacker I have had the pleasure of playing, and I have played many over the years. Especially, for an almost 35-year-old vintage piece. This is one very nice vintage Rickenbacker Bass.
These older (Vintage) Rickenbacker basses are getting harder and harder to find at a nice price, especially, in this condition. Collectors and players are well aware that Rickenbacker instruments ALWAYS continue to appreciate in value and as such, more and more, they are holding onto to these valuable handcrafted works of musical art as investments for the long haul. This is a great opportunity to get your hands on such an investment that will bring you much joy for years to come!
