2017 Chris Larkin ASAP DB5 5-String Fretless Headless Bass Guitar w/ 330 Year Old Figured Irish Oak Top, Alumitone Humbucker, RMC Bass Excellence Piezo System, 32” Scale

Here’s a show-stopping example of luthiery that straddles tradition and innovation with grace. Handbuilt by Irish master luthier Chris Larkin in 2017, this ASAP DB5 bass is a headless 5-string fretless work of art, strung E to C for players looking to step beyond the ordinary. The 16 coats of natural hand-rubbed lacquer finish puts that 330-year-old quartersawn Irish oak top on full display, rippling with deep, organic figuring. It’s a bold statement in form, texture, and tone. That singular Rickenbacker-style slash soundhole hints at the acoustic soul within—while the Rocklite fingerboard and minimalist, no-fret-dot aesthetic keep the look sleek and elegant.

Flip it around and it’s just as impressive—multi-laminate construction of maple, fiddleback sycamore, and walnut makes the neck not just strong but gorgeous. The body, made with a center spine of Irish fiddleback sycamore and body wings of western red cedar anchors the entire piece. Dual carbon fiber rods and a two-way truss rod ensure worry-free long-term stability. The pickups and electronics setup give you full tonal command: a black Lace Alumitone magnetic humbucker up front and custom Rocklite saddles housing RMC Bass Excellence piezo elements at the bridge, all married to an ABM hybrid preamp with independent magnetic/piezo controls. There's even a magnetic blend pot tucked into the battery cavity, perfect for dialing in your personal sweet spot.

This bass is in top-notch condition. The only evidence of use to note is a tiny, grain-of-rice sized ding on the top between the Alumitone and the upper volume control, a couple light dings on the treble side edge near the waist and lower bout, and some surface rubbing of the black metal string retainer at the headstock. Other than those, this bass is in near-mint condition.

This instrument is no ordinary fretless—it's an expressive voice tailored to the hands of an adventurous bassist. Every nuance comes through those La Bella Deep Talkin’ flats like ink on parchment. Whether you're sliding, swelling, or singing melodies on the high C, this bass rewards subtlety and confidence alike. Comes with a Thomann hard case and the original spec sheet—because when a bass is this dialed in, details matter.
