The exotic tonewood Wenge, which first gained global attention following Ervin Somogyi's column "New Brazilian Rosewood?" published in the 2013 Premier Guitar magazine, has since caught the interest of guitar enthusiasts worldwide. This led to high-end makers, such as Collings, offering Wenge as an option for back and sides. However, finding a guitar with Wenge back and sides, both domestically and internationally, remains a challenge. This is largely due to the difficulty involved in shaping the wood into guitar form, making it less favored by luthiers. Nevertheless, the potential of Wenge as a tonewood remains substantial, especially considering that relatively affordable, perfectly straight-grained quarter-sawn sets can be obtained.
This guitar, the OM model with Wenge back and sides and German Spruce top. It creates a harmonious blend of the bell-like resonance of German Spruce with the natural overtones of Wenge. Wenge offers a slightly more restrained low end compared to Indian Rosewood, while delivering a crisp, powerful tone with exceptional volume and sustain. In essence, it evokes a vintage sound, yet offers a new, fresh "Collings" voice that is both captivating and distinct.
