*Summary*
We offer today a wonderful 1968 Gibson EB-2 Electric Bass Guitar in a very slick, original sunburst finish. The EB-2 was designed & introduced in 1958 along with the iconic Gibson ES-335 guitar. EB-2 bass features an ES-335-style semi-hollow body and a short scale 30.5" neck. One of the most interesting and versatile basses we’ve had our hands on. The EB-2’s are coveted for many reasons; one of them being the truly unique baritone switch. In everyday terms, it sort of acts as a sub-bass control that cuts, yet enhances the low frequency range. With literally the push of a button, this bass goes from that classic bright and rich Gibson sound, to a very warm, thick, quaking-fault-line of a tone. When engaged, this switch cuts out one of the bobbins within the humbucker circuit, & essentially one obtains a pleasant single coil sonic profile.
This bass model was famously played & utilized by a who’s who list of pro bassists, i.e., John Entwhistle, Jack Bruce, Chas Chandler, Jack Cassidy, Paul Samwell -Smith, as well as many other bassists.
An iconic design, & sonically versatile for a single humbucking pickup design.

*Condition*
This bass is in excellent shape for a single owner, 56 year young instrument. We are the 2nd caretakers of this great looking, & even better sounding instrument. Desireable horizontal flecking in the grain of the carved maple top. A great visual aesthetic, as well as a testament to the cabinetmaker’s highly advanced skills!
This bass was given a full professional setup before listing. Some speckled blemishing on the upper bass bout of the body, & above the pickup/below the neck joint. Normal play wear related minute, fine scratches on the chrome pickup cover. Neck is in great playing condition. Some of the finish on the treble bout edge of the neck (from the 15th to the 17th fret)has significant wear from causes unknown. This wear pattern measures approx 2.5” long by 0.5” wide. Neck has some minor dings that are purely cosmetic. Approx. 3” horizontal surface scratch in the finish on the maple top. Small ding/scratch on back-left of body. Some small patches of discoloration on the now yellowed binding on the cutaways. Original Gibson chipboard case is in fair condition. Case is still somewhat intact, but the edges are detached there exists fraying between the top and bottom panels. Case still locks and holds, and the red felt lining is in good shape. Original schmutz in the interior, also for your enjoyment.
There is a term which is typically used by cabinetmakers called “fleck or flecking”. This term describes the actual visual aesthetic that is achieved by the specific cut used on the veneer or solid slab of wood used for the instrument‘s top & back. It’s a very rare & highly sought after method of instrument & furniture construction. Well, this particular EB-2 has a highly figured top w a lot of fleck within the vertical grain(view image # 3). The flecking can be seen as horizontal grain, almost like a quarter-sawn effect, traversing opposite of the verticality of the top’s grain pattern. A very cool visual aspect of this axe!
