When it was introduced in 1942, the Southern Jumbo had rounded, sloped shoulders. But in late 1962, Gibson changed the SJ over to a square-shoulder design, matching the shape of the popular Hummingbird. Structurally, the square-shaped Southern Jumbo was built like the Hummingbird, but it retained the same general features of the earlier round-shoulder model. During this period, the SJ was lightly-built with top bracing spread wide and set forward. In 1965, Gibson switched to a narrower neck across the board.
This guitar has the square shoulder SJ body shape with a sunburst finish, spruce top, mahogany back and sides, Brazilian bound rosewood fretboard with double parallelogram inlays, and seven layers of binding. Its wide nut 1 11/16″ (43mm) 1 piece mahogany neck is straight as an arrow with very little fret wear. Its got tons of B & W bindings on every edge. Its original tuners have been replaced with a set of cool gold open back 50’s Grovers utilizing the same holes if one wanted to put back its Klusons. Very cool pointy tortoise’gard. Beside a small pickgard crack next to the right side of the neck, and a crack in the back its in fairly good conditions, with some play time & weather checking here & there. It’s a pretty clean original example ready for its next caretaker. It comes in Gibson brown/yellow hard case. Original factory wood bridge included. Stunning vintage Gibson tone!!
