Maxson Dept of Commerce Vari-mu compressor 1959

Own a piece of recording history! Amazing vintage and rare compressor from the late 50’s. Initially commissioned by the government for communications use. A real collector’s piece. There were a few models from that time. This one appears to be the CA-1782. This thing is a vibe tone box. Especially great for the use of parallel vocal compression made famous by Michael Brauer when he was still mixing on the analog console. It will really make the vocal poke out of a mix.

Unit can also go into crazy distortion territory if driven hard. Basically it can be a guitar amp for line or instrument level signals. I have the pigtail attachments for xlr on the back. The front input is for high impedance microphones.

It’s in great working condition.

I will pack with extreme care and tons of bubble wrap and support. Probably use two boxes. and it will be insured for the full value of the unit. Tubes will be removed and also wrapped separately.
