McFarland Slope Shoulder Dreadnaught 2022 30’s Sunburst

Offering my McFarland (that’s me) "BCM-45-SS" SlopeShoulder dread. 

This is one that I built, after taking extensive measurements of a friend's ‘42 J45. It’s as close to the body shape and size as I could get, with the "organic nature" of wood being what it is, lol. The neck is my own favorite shape, with more of a V shape than his rounded one. Old Sitka Spruce top, African Wenge back/sides. Bloodwood binding. 

Specs:

-SlopeShoulder "J45" style Dreadnaught 

-Solid 35 yr old Sitka Spruce top

-Small sunburst with Abalone rosette and Red/Black rings. 

-1/4” Scalloped FWD shifted Spruce bracing, two lower tone bars

-Small Maine Maple bridgeplate 

-African Wenge back and sides

-Fiber "angled checkerboard" marquetry purfling

-Bloodwood binding top and back 

-Solid one piece Honduran Mahogany neck with Wenge faceplate and Bloodwood binding. Fairly thick Vee shape

-Maine Moose antler nut

-Ziricote fretboard w/Bloodwood binding, MOP dots

-Medium nickel frets

-Ziricote Bridge with 2.375” string spacing. 

-Scale 24.75”

-Nut 1.81”

-Neck joint: Cumpiano style M/T bolt-on

This one has been my pride and joy, I’m still somewhat amazed that I made it myself, lol. There are admittedly a few flaws, as I’m a hobbyist and self taught. 

Flaws:

-The neck heel has a slight gap on one side. The joint is absolutely solid, and has been this way for well over a year, so I don’t want to remove material from the other side of the heel and mess with intonation. It’s purely cosmetic and very thin. 

-The nut slot has a tiny chip (my slip with a small file…)

-One small ding on the Bass side upper bout. Too small to photograph 

This is a great player, and has a great projection throughout the tones. Not quite as deep lows as my ‘64 J45, but has better (IMO) midrange projection. The action is a very comfortable 5/64 Low E and a little lower High E. The two-way low profile Truss rod keeps the relief where it needs to be (.007” right now) The Cumpiano style Mortise and Tenon makes neck removal for future reset very simple (Google it)

I’ve told my wife that everything is for sale, so here comes the BCM-45-SS!
