About This Listing

Manuel Contreras Sr. (1928-1994), a native of Madrid, acquired excellent woodworking skills at a very young age that led to a budding career as a furniture maker. His cabinetry skills gained the attention of José Ramírez III, who invited him to apprentice in his workshop in 1959. Within three years he had developed his craft sufficiently to set up as an independent guitar maker in Madrid. So in 1962 Contreras set up on his own at number 80 Calle Mayor, which to this day has remained the location of the famous shop.

So what we have here is one of the last exquisite guitars built by the talented and world famous luthier Contreras I.

This guitar was formerly owned by/ and made for Pepe Romero, (according to the current owner). The current owner played in a guitar orchestra here in California, where he had made friends with Romero Jr.

He's a great friend of shop, and we believe everything he said to be true, unfortunately this doesn't add or subtract from the value without hard proof, but we wanted to share this story. Maybe there are some photo's out there of Pepe' playing this guitar, if you find some we'd love it if you shared it with us, thanks.

Anyhow... a day came while hanging out with Romero Jr... that it was suggested that he (our friend) should upgrade his guitar for the orchestra, because he had advanced in his playing, and Jr. thought it would be beneficial to have a better sounding and playing classical guitar... Long story short, (the current owner of this guitar) spent some time trying out various guitars that the Romero's (Jr. and Sr.) thought to be excellent playing and sounding for their friend... In the end this is the guitar they ended up making a deal on and it was personal favorite of Romero Sr. who only sold it because of his wanting to be generous to a family friend, which is this guitar we have here now for your consideration.
