The Analog Rytm MKII Black from Elektron is a hybrid drum machine with twelve highly feature-rich tracks, comprising specialised analogue percussion elements and sample tracks. The tracks, organised into voices or groups, feed into four high-quality effects, which are shared amongst the instruments. Combined with the tried-and-tested and extremely powerful live sequencer concept – which allows for precise control over every detail and even parameter locks – this makes the Analog Rytm MKII a well-balanced, modern drum machine suitable for all contemporary musical styles.

The Analog Rytm MKII’s sound generation comprises specialised analogue sound generators and samples. The analogue sound generators cover a wide range of electronic percussion sounds and have a full, assertive tone. Hard dark techno kicks, metallic hi-hats, woody rimshots and clattering snares represent just a fraction of the possible analogue drum sounds. Added to this is the sample player, which draws on a vast library of samples. Not only can you load samples into the instrument to suit your own taste, but you can also create your own samples directly within the unit using the sampling function. The Analog Rytm MKII offers a total of twelve tracks, which, however, share eight voices. Consequently, the ‘track partners’ – rimshot/clap, mid-tom/hi-tom, closed/open hi-hat and cymbal/cowbell – are always triggered selectively, but never simultaneously. Each track is rounded off with an analogue distortion unit and an analogue 2-pole multimode filter. The drum kit can then be enhanced with delay, reverb, distortion and a compressor.

Each voice of the Analog Rytm MKII features a highly customisable LFO. In addition to various trigger modes – which, depending on the setting, can also function as a mini envelope – the LFO’s tempo synchronisation proves to be a great help. Modulating the filter or pitch with it is part of the basic repertoire; selecting the sample with the LFO is a novelty, particularly in an experimental context. The two envelopes are designed as ADSR envelopes for the filter and as an AHD envelope for the VCA.

The typical Elektron sequencer is one of the most powerful of its kind. For each track, you can programme not only triggers but also shuffle, accent, slide, microtiming, parameter locks and individual step lengths. The actual track length is a maximum of 64 steps or four bars; longer patterns can be created using dividers. The uncluttered interface provides direct access to all relevant parameters. Drums can be programmed in the classic TR grid, played live using the pads in a manner similar to an MPC, or even recorded tonally in Chromatic Mode. The Analog Rytm MKII can store up to 128 projects. Each project comprises 128 sounds, 128 kits, 128 patterns and 16 songs.

The rear panel looks complete: alongside the stereo output, there are eight mono outputs for the individual tracks. The two stereo audio inputs serve different purposes: ‘Ext In’ is intended for looping through other sound generators, which is designed to save an additional mixing desk channel in smaller setups. ‘Audio In’ is intended for sampling and audio processing. The trio of MIDI outputs can also be used as a DinSync connection, which is essential for synchronising a TB-303 or TR-606. Two inputs for expression pedals or control voltages allow the Analog Rytm MKII’s parameters to be controlled externally. This range of features is rounded off by a USB port.

With OS 1.70, Elektron has given its hybrid ‘super-drummer’ an extremely powerful upgrade. In addition to numerous detailed improvements and additions, the sequencer has been enhanced with Euclidean Mode, an algorithm-based pattern generator, and Page Loop. The latter is very handy if, for example, you only have one trigger for a specific track in the pattern and want to work on it first without having to wait for the next loop. With the five new Machines, the total number of Machines has risen to 33. New additions include HH Lab, SY Chip, BD Acoustic, SD Acoustic and SY Raw. SY Chip is already being hailed as a hit, as Elektron has implemented a reproduction of the famous SID Station here. Thanks to the new ‘melody machines’, refined tuning and high-resolution semitones have been introduced in one go. Owners of the first-generation Analog RYTM have something to look forward to – the update also applies to the Mk1!
